God Judges... The Fall
text: Genesis 3
THE BIG IDEA?: God created everything good, but now it is broken and twisted. Adams sin is imputed to us and we are devastated to the core of our being by the deadly, sickening, effects of sin
SO WHAT?: God judges sin. Only God could provide a solution to the profound effects of sin. The cross of Jesus is that solutionINTRO:
• something is wrong w/ our world... something is broken... sickness, disease, pain, death, mourning... have you ever noticed that everyone (christian, non-christian, etc) seems to agree that the way the world is, is NOT the way the world should be.
• Gen 3 records the worst day in human history... we must understand this or else human history will make no sense
• turn to GENESIS CHAPTER 3... sometimes when a passage is very familiar to us we lose our appreciation for its truths... this passage should devastate us!1. THE ORIGINATION OF SIN
• Gen 3:1 THE ENEMY Satan here is changing and manipulating Gods Word. We take Gods Word literally... and those who don't are SATANIC. The result of not taking God at His Word is DEVASTATING.
• Gen. 3:2-5 THE TEMPTATION / LIE we sin when we try and obtain that which we think God is withholding from us
• Gen 3:6 THE SIN / REBELLION saw, desire, took (look, hook, took) - where was Adam?
• Gen 3:7-14 THE AFTERMATH sin creates distance / separation sinful people HIDE from God... It is God who seeks sinners!
• Gen 3:15 THE GOSPEL PROMISE the 1st mention of the Gospel!... the "Dragon Slayer" is coming!!... seed heel head
• Gen 3:16-19 THE JUDGMENT your world is cursed, everything under your dominion is broken, and more difficult, work is harder, family is harder, etc. God does this to humble us & to cause us to repent.
• Gen 3:20-24 GOD RESCUES Only God can properly deal with sin, our attempts are feeble, God prepares the sacrifice Himself. From now on God is only approached by sacrifice2. THE DEFINITION OF SIN
• defined = doing what you should not, not doing what you should.
• better defined = living for the glory of something (or self) other than God (Rom 3:23)
• shalom = PEACE, tranquility, all goodness, completeness, health, everything as it should be, harmony. Everything that is not Shalom is sin. Jesus is the "Prince of Shalom"
• biblical descriptions of... thoughts, motives, words, deeds... godlessness, idolatry, blindness, hard hearted, stiff necked, breaking Gods law, missing the mark, spiritual death, separation, perversion, corruption, decay, etc.3. THE IMPUTATION OF SIN
• READ Romans 5:12-21... there are only 2 categories of people...
• those under Adam...
> receive his sin
> die
> experience condemnation
> unrighteous
> disobedient
> to be under Adam is to be born
• those under Jesus
> receive His sinlessness
> live
> experience justification
> made righteous in Jesus
> obedient
> to be under Jesus is to be born again
• Adam was our representative, our Father, or "head"... he represented us well in that he did exactly what each of us would have done. We inherit his SIN NATURE.
• Jesus is the representative of the believer... He is the "head" of the Christian... He represented us on the cross. Jesus gives us a NEW NATURE.
• what is "Total Depravity"? NOT as if we are as bad as we could be or that we do all the bad we possible could all the time. It is instead that we can do no good. Our depravity is "total"... our mind, emotions, will, and body are all corrupt… Psa 51:5; 58:3; Eph 2:3
• Sinful VIEWS of Sin
> sin is just "breaking some rules' (no, it violates Gods character)
> sin is no problem because Jesus forgives me
> God knows my heart, He knows deep down I'm OK
> if I forget to confess one sin I will be unforgiven and end up in hell
> sin is fun… its ok if I just sin a "little bit"
> its not sin if no one gets hurt
> its only a sin if you get caught (secret sins count!, and God always knows them)
> everyone's doing it... its just our culture… If its popular its OK
> some Christians make everything a sin issue (style, preferences, methods, etc.)
• Sinful RESPONSES to Sin
> minimize it
> I'm the exception to the rule (everyone thinks they are the exception!?)
> blame shifting (Gen 3)
> diversion (changing the subject)
> partial confession
> regretting the consequences, but not the sin
> excuse making
> victimization
> confession without repentance (w/o change)
> you're a good person, just try harder4. HOW DOES GOD RESPOND TO SIN?
• He JUDGES sin... He immediately exposes the sin and its consequences
• He gives GRACE... God pursues them, He talks to them, He teaches them... like a loving Dad. He makes the promise "Jesus is coming!" (Gen 3:15)
• 2 Cor 5:21 "For He made Him who knew no sin [Jesus] to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him" (aka "the Great Exchange"!)CONCLUSION :
• We are all under Adam… we should be devastated by sin, by both our sinful nature and by the sin we choose. Heaven Help Us!!
• The right response from us to Gods Judgment and Grace should always be a response of complete and thorough REPENTANCE and FAITH
• Jesus is the ONLY sacrifice, the ONLY means that God has prepared to deal with your sin... Jesus said He cam to seek and to save sinners... receive Him today!
• DON'T be soo foolish as to choose to stand before God dressed in the FIG LEAVES of your own works, when you could stand in the righteous work of Jesus!
